We do not provide GP letters to support housing applications.
- You do not normally need a GP letter to apply for housing on medical grounds.
We have confirmed with the local council's Housing Department that applicants should not be asked to obtain a supporting letter from their GP. Applicants should instead provide relevant medical information as part of their application, available on your NHS app.
The practice cannot provide an opinion about what type of accommodation would be suitable for you, whether your current accommodation is unsuitable, or what priority you should receive. Decisions about housing priority and suitability are made by the local authority or housing provider.
What medical information should you provide?
As a first step, you should obtain medical information for your housing application yourself using your NHS App. This can include your recorded health conditions, letters from hospital specialists and records from GP appointments.
Hospital specialist letters can be particularly useful as they may contain detailed information about your medical condition and how it affects you.
If you have not previously been given access to your health record through the NHS App, or are having difficulty accessing your information, please contact the practice. We can advise you on how to access the information available to you or, where appropriate, provide a copy of relevant information from your medical record.
If further medical information is required
If the Council or housing provider requires medical information that is not available to you, they can contact the practice directly. We can provide factual information from your medical record, such as diagnoses, treatment and medication where relevant. We cannot provide supporting letters or opinions about housing suitability or priority.
Please do not submit a request to the practice for a letter supporting your housing application, as we will not be able to provide one.
